Hey Dave. Im right there with you on the clubhouse concept. As a kid, I used to LOVE my personal space. Whether I was playing with my GI Joe guys, playing Nintendo, organizing my baseball cards and comic books, or even later, hangin’ out with my band in the basement. I always enjoyed having that personal little den, and I always sought out ways of improving it. The workshop really is just an extension of that. When you look at it that way, it sure does make sense why so many people go crazy when outfitting their shops. We feel like kids, only now we have credit cards! lol
As someone who made that exact shift you mentioned (from hobby to pro), I can tell you that SOME of that magic does wear off……but certainly not ALL. And perhaps if I continued on that path (just building custom furniture), the magic would have eventually worn off completely. But after about 3 years of running the business, I was still enjoying the quiet solitude of my personal creative space. And even though I had to go into the shop every day in order to put food on the table, it was hard not to have a smile on my face as I poured my morning coffee and headed out into my grown up club house.
Great show man.
Dave,
You can rest assured that you are not alone.
My shop in in my detached garage and I have often found myself just sitting out there doing nothing in fact I spend much more time just sitting out there than I do on projects. I think we all have our place to run off to when the stresses of the day are getting to us.
If ever you find yourself in upstate NY stop on by and we can sit and look at the pretty tools.
My shop is little more than a closet, but if I’ve swept up my sawdust and shavings, I love to go in there. I don’t even have a chair or stool, but don’t need one. I can just stand there, look around, and enjoy.
And now that I’ve got a couple things I’ve built for the shop, I like to pick them up and say, “Yes. I can build things!”
