It seems like manufacturers keep trying to turn our power tools into high-tech gadgets. This week, I give a rundown of the most common technological trickery that gets inflicted upon us, and I cut through the hype to determine what’s useful and what’s not.
Also, the Modern Woodshop buzzer makes an appearance this week for the first time since episode 4! This time, it’s much louder and scarier.

No lasers on hand tools?? I beg to differ.

supreme silliness
This is too funny. Check out page 13 of the latest Fine Woodworking magazine (issue #201). There is a full page ad for the new Craftsman 10″ Laser Table Saw. It has a laser that projects the saw blade’s cut line across the workpiece.
When will the laser madness end?
Dave, I have to agree with you for the most part regarding the uselessness of most of the lasers and digital readouts. I do however like the ability to go back at any time and reproduce a part. I am admitatly not the most efficient woodworker. Even if a digital fence is not accurate, that doesn’t matter as long as you know what the reading was originally. In regards to the router fence, I don’t have a digital gauge, but I do have an Incra fence which is at least as accurate as a digital scale. I love the micro adjustability especially for dados and grooves. I will use an undersize bit and then I can sneek up on a perfect fit.
Don
Hey Dave. I was at the grocery store the other day and saw this dog. He said he was a fan of woodworking podcasts and I told him I know Dave Noftz. This was his response:

What next laser guided chisels, laser guided screwdriver, laser guided nail gun?????
Keep up the good work.
